The International Aid Transparency Initiative

The International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) was created in 2008 as a means of providing clear, standardized information about aid spending. Its purpose is to make it easier to find, track and compare data about what is being spent by aid organizations.

The IATI is a voluntary initiative which brings together donor countries, developing country governments and nongovernmental organizations. It consists of a set of aid information standards, an online registry of published data and a governance and advocacy process that builds the case for transparency across the aid sector.

In February 2011 the participants to the IATI agreed a common, open and international standard for publishing information about aid. Based on a series of numerical codes to represent standardized values such as sector and organization type, this standard allows stakeholders to report on individual aid activities as well as future budgets and forward planning. This data is then published on the IATI website in a format which permits users to perform their own analysis of the information

As part of its commitment to transparency, the Global Fund signed the IATI in early 2011.
